"The spacious 320GB hard drive has an active protection system, which parks the drive heads when the machine is jostled or dropped to prevent possible data loss."

Latest Samsung Go netbook

Latest Samsung Go netbook

Samsung’s latest netbook, the $478 Go, comes in an array of colors and offers up some impressive battery life. We love the keyboard, too. So far, Samsung’s netbooks just keep getting better.

Highlights:

“The outer shell, with its unique textures, bright colors, and rounded corners, does make the Go stand out from the other netbooks in the crowd, but whether that's good is a matter of taste.”

“The Go's performance is good. Once we removed the bundled 90-day McAfee Internet Security Suite trial, which we've found significantly impacts netbook performance, the Go is among the faster Atom N270–based netbooks we've tested

Asus G51Vx-RX05 Gaming Notebook

Asus G51Vx-RX05 Gaming Notebook

Asus knows how to please gamers on a budget. Its latest 15.6-inch gamer, the G51Vx-RX05 manages excellent performance—especially on DX9 titles—and an affordable price. You can even overclock it for improved performance. Not bad for $1,049.

Highlights:

“With backlit strips running along its sides and an illuminated Republic of Gamers badge embedded in the center of its glossy white metallic lid, the G51Vx has that edgy look that gamers crave.”

“The G51Vx-RX05 is powered by a 2GHz Intel P7350 Core 2 Duo processor comes with 4GB of DDR2 memory and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX260M graphics controller.

Latest Dell Latitude 2100

Latest Dell Latitude 2100

Dell's Latitude 2100 is aimed squarely at the education market, but we're not talking about embossed mouse ears or SpongeBob-shaped touch pads here. Rather, the Latitude 2100 has a thick, rugged design meant to handle the rigors of classroom and hallway handling. That's not to say there's no kid appeal. The rubberized protective shell is available in a variety of stylish colors that should appeal to children and teens: School Bus Gold, Schoolhouse Red, Blue Ribbon, Ballfield Green, and, for the Goth kids in the crowd, Chalkboard Black. And for hauling it along with the usual pile of textbooks, you can clip an optional handle or shoulder strap directly to the netbook.

The netbook's lid is thick, thanks to the touch screen and rubber shell.

Open the Latitude 2100, and you'll find the lid is as thick as those found on many full-size notebooks, connected to the body of the netbook with beefy plastic hinges. The rubber on the shell makes the Latitude 2100 slightly thicker than most netbooks, at 1.57 inches at its thickest point. The 10.1-inch LCD screen sports a low native resolution of 1,024x576, which may present problems with some older educational games that assume a minimum resolution of 800x600 pixels.

The standout feature of the LCD is its touch-screen option. This $40 add-on (included in the $559 price of our review unit) is designed for fingertip use—no stylus necessary or included. It works well for selecting objects onscreen, and we assume it will be even handier once these netbooks start shipping with Windows 7, which has enhanced touch-interface support.

Acer Aspire One 751h Netbook

Acer Aspire One 751h Netbook

The appeal of the new Aspire One 751h is not so much what this netbook adds to Acer's netbook line, although we do like its roomy 11.6-inch screen and new slim design. Rather, the most significant update is what it does away with. Gone is the trademark cramped Aspire One 89-percent-wide keyboard, replaced by a full-width model that's a pleasure to type on.

The Aspire One 751h ($449 in our test configuration) actually feels less bulky than its smaller-screen predecessors, thanks to its slim, inch-thick design. The 10.1-inch-screened Aspire One AOD150, by comparison, is 1.3 inches thick. And the Aspire One 751h is just a tenth of a pound heavier than the AOD150, at three pounds with Acer's six-cell battery. (The unit comes standard with a three-cell battery; the six-cell is an optional upgrade that was factored into the $449 cost of our test unit.) The new case has a slick, two-tone design, with a glossy black exterior and gunmetal silver surrounding the keyboard. White, blue, and red models are available as well. The removable six-cell battery on the unit we reviewed juts out the back of the notebook at a slight downward angle; the standard three-cell battery inserts flush with the case.

The standout design feature on the Aspire One 751h is its bright, colorful 11.6-inch LED-backlit screen. With its 1,366x768 native resolution, this 16-to-9-aspect-ratio screen offers significantly more screen space than the 1,024x576 and 1,024x600 screens found on 10.1-inch netbooks. This equates to more horizontal room for toolbars or multiple windows, and even better, less vertical scrolling. Its expansiveness makes the netbook experience feel much less like a compromise. The only downside of the screen is its glossy surface, which is very reflective

Latest HP Probook 4710s

Latest HP Probook 4710s

HP sprawls out with this 17.3-inch business notebook. We love the low price of $1,099, but we wonder if HP cut a few too many corners in an effort to keep the price low. One thing it manages well, though, is performance.

Highlights:

“The ProBook 4710s doesn’t have the panache of the more exclusive (and expensive) HP EliteBook or Dell Studio XPS lines, but its glossy, black, squared-off chassis is reasonably stylish for a business machine.”

“We have no complaints about the 17.3-inch widescreen. The LED-backlit panel is very bright and delivers rich colors. The 1,600x900 resolution isn’t the full 1,080p (1,920x1,080) multimedia addicts crave, but it is still HD and appropriate for a businessmachine where you’ll actually need to read the text on the screen without squinting.”

“Thanks to the dedicated graphics, the ProBook 4710s also delivered better 3D performance than we’re used to from a business machine.”

OCZ announces 2GiB of gaming DDR2

OCZ announces 2GiB of gaming DDR2

RAM manufacturer OCZ has put together its latest gaming RAM modules for DDR2. The new modules, available as PC2-4200 and PC2-5400 and available from 512MiB modules up to 2GiB dual channel kits, offer tight timings and feature OCZ's latest heat spreader, pictured below.

DDR2 FTW

Dr. Michael Schuette, VP of Technology Development at OCZ Technology has said that "By employing XTC heat spreaders on our premium Gold DDR2 GX memory we are able to offer high-end gamers and enthusiasts a superior solution that addresses the unique requirements of the latest 3D intensive titles."

To us, however, the heatsinks look a lot like a gimmick. However, it's performance that counts, and on paper OCZ looks to have a good offering, so let's hope they live up to the promise.

Apple iPod Video 80 GB

The iPod finally got some competition this year with Microsoft, Creative, Sandisk, iAudio, etc, making various portable media players having comparable feature-set to the iPod. But, nothing is still close-by. The Apple iPod Video 80 GB is the newest entrant to the iPod family. Currently, it is the highest capacity media player, which can also double up as a portable hard disk drive. Besides, the higher capacity, the brightness has also increased along with new features such as search. One certainly needs the search facility for the capacity of the player.

Kingston HyperX 1.2 GHz DDR2 RAM

Kingston HyperX 1.2 GHz DDR2 RAM

The ram is having a hard time catching up to the latest processors having FSB of over 1 GHz. Intel's Server processors already have a FSB of 1333MHz and AMD Athlons have hyper transport speed of 2GHz. Just when RAM was becoming a bottleneck in a system's performance, Kingston released DDR2 RAM running at 1.2 GHz. There have been attempts by various manufacturers to reach that magical number, but none of them are in a position to make them widely available. Kingston introduced this speed in their top-of-the-line memory sticks; Hyper-X. Price: $525 (Rs. 24,000)

Kingston launches low priced DDR3 RAM

Kingston launches low priced DDR3 RAM

Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600MhzI am a big fan of computer hardware and when NVIDIA launched its new gear a few weeks back including the 9800 GX2, 9800 GTX and the 790i Ultra mainboards I was very excited. I was especially glad to see NVIDIA finally put out a DDR3 compatible mainboard.

Kingston announced its latest RAM recently that looks to be the perfect complement to the NVIDIA 790i Ultra. Kingston released 1600MHz DDR3 memory in 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB kits. Anyone that has prices DDR3 Ram knows that the stuff is expensive. Kingston says its 1600MHz HyperX DDR3 is designed to be economically priced.

The RAM is available in a 1GB module at $198 with CL9-9-9-27 timings, a 2GB module retails for $395. A kit of two 1GB modules retails for $395 and a 4GB kit with a pair of 2GB modules is $790. Kingston also backs the modules with a lifetime warranty.

Epson announces Perfection V300 Photo scanner. Cameras, Scanners, Epson 0

The Perfection V300 Photo is the latest scanner from Epson and is aimed squarely at photo enthusiasts.

It is capable of scanning documents, photos, film or books, and has a built-in transparency unit for scanning 35mm films and slides with the supplied film holder, at resolutions up to 4800dpi.

Epson Launches V500 Photo Scanner

Epson Launches V500 Photo Scanner
f you're into scanners, this looks like one sweet piece of hardware - a couple of weeks ago I was using an Epson multifunction printer/scanner to scan 80+ old family photos (look for a story about that later) and many of the features mentioned below certainly would have come in handy.

LONG BEACH, Calif., Aug. 22, 2007 – Epson America, Inc. today unveils its latest scanner for the advanced amateur and creative consumer markets. The Epson Perfection® V500 Photo color scanner provides professional results with 6400 dpi optical resolution to enable extraordinary enlargements at a groundbreaking price. Also featuring Epson’s new ReadyScan™ LED technology, which delivers fast scans and no warm-up time, the Epson V500 Photo is an outstanding value for only $249.99.

With 6400 dpi optical resolution, users can create 17” x 22” or bigger enlargements from film with incredible detail and accuracy. Additionally, with 48-bit color depth and a 3.4 dynamic range, the Epson V500 Photo produces scans with brilliant, true-to-life colors.

The energy-efficient ReadyScan LED technology completely eliminates warm-up time both when turning on the scanner and when switching back-and-forth between reflective and film scanning, as well as automatically turns off in standby mode, using less power while offering greater productivity. Because the LED is more efficient than cold cathode fluorescent lamps, users get fast scan speeds. The ReadyScan LED also adjusts color of the light source based on the type of original being scanned, using white light for positive film and blue light for negative film, to produce precise and efficient scans. Additionally, the mercury-free LEDs are friendly to the environment.

The Epson V500 Photo includes two powerful, yet easy-to-use complete photo restoration solutions for advanced amateur photographers and creative consumers, including Digital ICE™ and Epson Easy Photo Fix® technology. Digital ICE is an innovative technology that easily removes the appearance of dust and scratches from film, eliminating the need for costly photo retouching services to get the best results. Epson Easy Photo Fix restores faded color photos, slides and negatives back to their original brilliance with one click.

“The Epson Perfection V500 Photo is an ideal solution for advanced amateur photographers, graphic designers and other creative consumers who are looking for a scanner that delivers professional quality scans and productivity at an affordable price,” said Grace Huang, senior product manager, Professional Imaging, Epson America. “This scanner has the superior performance of a high-end commercial lab scanner, yet is designed to accommodate varying skill levels, whether for in-house use, the professional studio or small office. The scanner is yet another example of Epson’s unyielding commitment to deliver the optimal combination of technology, quality and value.”

Adding to the productivity of the EpsonV500 Photo scanner is a built-in transparency unit (TPU) with a moving carriage and lamp optimized for scanning multiple 35mm negatives, slides and medium-format film. The scanner can handle up to four mounted slides or two film strips up to 12 total frames, or medium-format film of 2-1/4”, 120/220 and 6 x 12 cm. Additional features include an optional Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) that enables users to quickly scan multiple documents.

The Epson V500 Photo also comes with Epson Creativity Suite, which includes Scan to E-Mail, Copy Utility and Scan to PDF; Adobe® Photoshop® Elements; and ABBYY® Fine Reader® 6 Sprint Plus OCR (ABBYY® Fine Reader® 5 Sprint Plus OCR for Mac). The scanner is compatible with Microsoft® Windows® 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Macintosh OS® X 10.2.8 and later, and is also TWAIN compliant.

The Epson V500 Photo can be purchased for an estimated street price of $249.99 from Epson authorized dealers, consumer electronic stores, mail order, distribution, and on the Epson Store Web site (http://forums.thoughtsmedia.com/www.epsonstore.com). The optional ADF will be available for an estimated street price of $199.99 on the Epson Store Web site. The Epson V500 Photo comes with a one-year limited warranty. More information about the Epson V500 Photo and other Epson scanners is available at http://forums.thoughtsmedia.com/www.epson.com or 1-800-GO-EPSON (1-800-463-7766).

Samsung announced final official details on two expensive Blu-ray players today, including the HD DVD-playin' BD-UP5000 we wrote about before, and a new home theater-in-a-box (HTiB) that incorporates a Blu-ray player, the HT-BD2. We're now told the BD-UP5000 will retail for $1,049, and the HT-BD2 will sell for $1,499. Both will ship sometime in the fourth quarter of this year, and will round out the company's five-model series of 2007 Blu-ray players.

After the LG BH-100, the Samsung BD-UP5000 will be the second player to handle both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. It's the first to support the interactive layer of HD DVD, known as HDi, which enables full interactive-menu use. It also features, like all 2007 Samsung Blu-ray players, Ethernet ports, HDMI 1.3 ports and the ability to output 1080p/24 video from Blu-ray (but not HD DVD) discs, although in our tests of the Samsung BD-P1200 and other BD players, 1080p/24 was a letdown on the displays we tested. We did appreciate the BD-P1200's HQV video processing, however, which is also present on the BD-UP5000 and the Blu-ray-only BD-P2400. Like Denon's DVD-3800BDCI, the BD-UP5000 will also enable interactive features like picture-in-picture commentaries (for what they're worth). For all of you keeping track, we haven't confirmed yet whether the Samsung will actually comply with the BD-ROM Profile 1 Version 1.1 spec.

While we lauded the $1200 LG for the groundbreaking combo ability, we can't help but be disappointed in the price of combination players. As many have pointed out before, you can purchase a standalone Blu-ray player and a standalone HD DVD player separately for less money than the price of one of the combo players. One of these combo players also costs around the same price as an Xbox 360 Elite with the HD DVD drive and a PlayStation3, a combination that brings both next-gen disc playback and next-gen gaming.

The HT-BD2, meanwhile, is the first HTiB we've seen announced with a built-in Blu-ray player. That player has the same feature set as the BD-P1400 standalone player (in other words, no HQV processing), yet it stands as part of a 7.1-channel speaker system--that's five tower speakers, two satellite rear speakers and a powered sub--driven by 1,100 watts. Although those specs are impressive for an HTiB, we're skeptical about the HT-BD2's reception from the generally separates-oriented Blu-ray/HD DVD buyer.

Sony carries in portable DVD player

Sony carries in portable DVD player

Some might prefer a low-cost 14in laptop for cheap on-the-move DVD playback, but if you fancy a more dedicated device, how about Sony's latest portable DVD player, the DVP-FX850, that's ready to go without Windows.

The unit is based around an 8in widescreen display that can open out through 180°. The optical drive can read all but the latest HD media and will display and play MP3, JPEG and DivX files stored on data discs. It'll even handle MP3s and JPEGs on Flash drives plugged into its USB port.

The DVP-FX850 has a pair of earphone sockets - handy for kids stuck in the back of the car - but the unit also has digital optical outputs for hi-fi connections and an A/V jack for plugging it into a TV.

Sony claimed the player has a six-hour battery life, but it also comes with a world power supply, for the wide-ranging traveller.

Expect to pay around £250 for it.

Network Media Players

Network Media Players

Network media players are certainly the cheapest variety, but they require a functioning network infrastructure that has to be paid for, too. That means that, as a rule, they can't make recordings. Put simply, a network media player is basically an adapter that converts native PC data formats such as MP3, DIVX, MPEG-1, 2 and 4 into audio and video signals for playback devices. However, the way they work and the design vary according to the manufacturer. In most cases, though, the more-or-less standard size is now about as big as a network hub/switch. You also have to differentiate between players with a wireless LAN connection and those without.

The PC As A Media Server: Hauppauge MediaMVP

Not a TV card like you might expect, the Media-MVP from Hauppauge is connected to the computer via Ethernet and plays back MPEG-1 and 2 videos and MP3 music files and displays JPEG, GIF and BMP images on the TV. Visual and audio playback takes place via the available composite (FBAS), S-Video or RGB-SCART jacks. Similar to the external TV cards from Hauppauge in terms of looks, the box is simple and easy to control using the remote control (included). Price: $100 (€150). Conclusion: Cheap, compact and user-friendly, but inadequate format support means it's still no alternative to the latest DVD players that can be had for less than €100 ($100) that already play DIVX, Xvid and OGG files.

Looks like the external TV cards from Hauppauge, but it isn't: one: the network media player MediaMVP.

LG’s Latest Portable DVD Player

LG’s Latest Portable DVD Player

LG makes every product under the sun. You name it, LG probably mass produces it. LG also enjoys marketing bizarre combination of electronic equipment. Take this 8″ portable DVD player, the LG DP889. Little excessive on the numbers, don’t you think?

In addition to the Pebble and BD-P1400, Samsung today also announced the launch of seven new DVD players here. Some of the new features that have been introduced in the 2008 DVD line up include: Best Playability, FM Tuner, Power Resume Function, USB 2.0 connection, CD ripping and 14 bit Video DAC. These players also have the cool D2RS technology, which aims and claims to play all kinds of scratched DVDs.

Internal storage

Internal storage

Hardware that keeps data inside the computer for later use and remains persistent even when the computer has no power.

  • Hard disk - for medium-term storage of data.

Video display controller

Video display controller

Produces the output for the visual display unit. This will either be built into the motherboard or attached in its own separate slot (PCI, PCI-E, PCI-E 2.0, or AGP), in the form of a Graphics Card.

III. Storage controllers

torage controllers

Controllers for hard disk, CD-ROM and other drives like internal Zip and Jaz conventionally for a PC are IDE/ATA; the controllers sit directly on the motherboard (on-board) or on expansion cards, such as a Disk array controller. IDE is usually integrated, unlike SCSI Small Computer System Interface which can be found in some servers. The floppy drive interface is a legacy MFM interface which is now slowly disappearing. All these interfaces are gradually being phased out to be replaced by SATA and SAS.
